synopsis
BOOM
Starting from the need to raise awareness of the urgency in Climate Protection and, with “Sustainability” being the primary purpose of the initiative of this competition, the sculpture BOOM (The Eternal Return), proposes itself as a reflection on the environmental impact of the human footprint on the planet Earth, leading us to consider how this reality may irreversibly affect us in the near future. This public intervention is proposed in the creation of a composition that is materialized by a set of iron pipes, to define a volume that is installed spatially with a certain inclination in relation to the horizon. Given that each of the perspectives of this work explores specific readings and contents, the sculpture will gain so much if it fits in a wide and open environment so that it can be appreciated in its various meanings: the inclination attributed to the tubes allows the silhouette of a “wave” to be defined laterally ”, Bringing with it the skyline of any cosmopolitan city, about to collapse. From a frontal and top perspective, through transversal cuts in the tubes, you can perceive the silhouette of a boomerang: an element known for reflecting the action of the one who projects it in space, the boomerang brings with it the concept of the sensation of return, that is why it is the “matrix” for the organization of the parts that make up the sculpture, which when cut out laterally in a spherical shape, leads us to an emptiness as if “planetary”, a kind of black hole that “absorbs” everything. As we approach, a boomerang seems to “swallow” us, in a giant wave of “foam circles”, which hang over our heads as if they are going to crush us. It will be this “charge”, in the different sensations and interpretations that are intended to be explored, in a direct dialogue with the passerby who, when approaching, includes himself in the composition, completing it. In this sense, this work will only make sense when framed in a public space with pedestrian access (such as a park, green leisure area or large square).

Partindo da necessidade de sensibilização para a urgência na Protecção Climática e, sendo a “Sustentabilidade” o propósito primordial da iniciativa do presente concurso, a escultura BOOM (O Eterno Retorno), propõe-se como reflexão sobre o impacto ambiental da pegada humana no planeta Terra, levando-nos a considerar como essa realidade nos poderá afectar de modo irreversível num futuro próximo. Propõe-se esta intervenção pública na criação de uma composição que se materializa por um conjunto de tubos de ferro, para definir um volume que se instala espacialmente com uma certa inclinação relativamente ao horizonte. Dado que cada uma das perspetivas desta obra explora leituras e conteúdos específicos, a escultura ganhará tanto se enquadrar numa envolvente ampla e desafogada para poder ser apreciada nas suas diversas acepções: a inclinação atribuída aos tubos permite que se defina lateralmente a silhueta de uma “onda”, trazendo consigo a skyline de uma qualquer cidade cosmopolita, prestes a desabar. Já de uma perspectiva frontal e de topo, através de cortes transversais nos tubos, poderá percepcionar-se a silhueta de um boomerang: elemento conhecido por reflectir a acção daquele que o projecta no espaço, o boomerang traz consigo o conceito da sensação de retorno, sendo por isso a “matriz” para a organização das partes que compõem a escultura, que ao ser recortada lateralmente em forma esférica, remete-nos para um vazio como que “planetário”, uma espécie de buraco negro que “absorve” tudo. Ao nos aproximarmos, um boomerang nos parece “engolir”, numa onda gigante de “círculos de espuma”, que pairam em cima das nossas cabeças como se nos fossem esmagar. Será essa “carga”, nas diversas sensações e interpretações que se pretende explorar, num diálogo directo com o transeunte que, ao aproximar-se, se inclui ele mesmo na composição, completando-a. Neste sentido, esta obra só fará sentido quando enquadrada num espaço público de acesso pedonal (como um parque, zona verde de lazer ou ampla praça).
